In a Vast Universe, Rediscovering the Human

Years ago, when I was still a university student in China reading ancient texts, I could not have imagined that I would spend the greater part of my life in the West — or that the world would enter the age of artificial intelligence so rapidly.

What preoccupied me then was a question I kept encountering in the classical writings: Why do the ancients always return to the same problems? How should a person live? Why do civilizations rise and fall? What is a human being's place between heaven and earth?

I thought those were merely the philosophical preoccupations of people who lived a long time ago. Many years later, I began to understand that those questions have never gone out of date.

Now, in 2026, the United States government has officially declassified decades of UAP and UFO files. The website war.gov/ufo received more than 1.7 billion visits within a few weeks — a number that is, by itself, an unprecedented event in the history of human civilization.

But this book is not really about aliens. It is about a harder question: if this information had been available to the public for the past eighty years, how differently would we understand the universe — and ourselves?

Technology determines how fast a civilization can travel.

Morality determines how far it can go.

If UFO information had been publicly available all along, would the Fermi Paradox still exist?

Almost everyone has had this experience. Late at night, you tilt your head back and look at the stars, and something stirs — a feeling that is hard to name. Strange, even: you are standing on solid ground, yet something in you recognizes that sky as intimately familiar.

Li Bai, the great Tang dynasty poet, wrote: 'I raise my head and gaze at the bright moon; I lower it and think of home.' Why has that image endured for more than a thousand years? Because everyone who reads it thinks: yes, that is exactly the feeling. But where is that home?

On May 8, 2026, the United States government released the first batch of declassified UAP and UFO documents. The war.gov/ufo website accumulated more than 1.7 billion visits within weeks. This is no longer a niche conversation. This is all of humanity, lifting its head at the same moment.

And the question that follows is one we have not seriously asked before:

If governments had not suppressed this information for eighty years — if citizens around the world had been able to discuss these phenomena openly since 1947 — would Fermi have even needed to ask 'Where is everybody?' Or would we already have a different answer?

In 1983, I was a university student in China, subscribing to a magazine called Flying Saucer Exploration. In that era, reading material was scarce. Anyone who has studied physics understands inertia — every moving object requires time to change speed or direction. This is Newton's first law. But the accounts in that magazine described flight behavior that violated it: instantaneous acceleration, right-angle turns at speed, hovering motionlessly then vanishing. These maneuvers are not merely difficult with current technology. Under known physics, they should not be possible at all.

That question has stayed with me for decades. I bring it into this book, and look at it alongside you.

1.1  Australia: The Wandjina Paintings

In the Kimberley region of northwestern Australia, ancient rock paintings depict figures the Aboriginal people call 'Wandjina' — sky beings, or spirit ancestors from above. Their characteristics: enormous heads, no mouths, oversized eyes, slender bodies, halos of light encircling the head. The resemblance to descriptions given by modern UAP witnesses is striking enough to have attracted serious anthropological attention.

This could be explained as universal patterns of human imagination. It could also be explained as records of something genuinely seen. The reader may judge.

1.2  The Earliest Written Accounts

In the Annals of Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose III (circa 1480 BCE): 'Circles of fire appeared in the sky, brighter than the sun, about the diameter of a man, silent and terrible.' The Chinese Song dynasty scientist Shen Kuo recorded in his Mengxi Bitan a personal observation of a large luminous sphere that rose from a lake, hovered, illuminated the surrounding woodland as brightly as daylight, then vanished — only to reappear moments later. Shen Kuo was among the most rigorous scientific observers in Chinese history. His description matches, almost word for word, the pattern of modern UAP sighting reports.

When Soldiers Began to See Things They Could Not Explain

During World War II, Allied airmen began reporting a recurring phenomenon: luminous objects following their aircraft during combat missions. The pilots called them 'Foo Fighters.' Their characteristics were consistent: they accompanied aircraft in flight, were impervious to gunfire, moved at extraordinary speeds, and could vanish instantaneously.

The Allied forces assumed they were German weapons. The German pilots were reporting the same objects — and assumed they were Allied weapons. Neither side had this technology.

The Roswell Incident, 1947 — and Eight Decades of Silence

In July 1947, an unidentified object came down near Roswell, New Mexico. The US Army Air Forces initially issued a press release stating they had 'recovered a flying disc.' Within hours, the statement was revised: it was a weather balloon. From that moment until 2026, the US government's official position remained unchanged: no aliens, no unexplained aircraft.

The question this book is centrally concerned with is not whether the Roswell object was extraterrestrial. The question is: what happened to public understanding of these phenomena during the eight decades that followed? What did institutional silence cost us — in scientific progress, in honest inquiry, in our ability to make sense of what people were genuinely seeing?

On May 8, 2026, the US Department of War published the first batch of declassified UAP files on war.gov/ufo: 162 documents spanning photographs, videos, eyewitness testimony, and internal memoranda, covering 1944 to the present.

President Trump posted on Truth Social: 'It is my honor to direct the government to make public all information related to extraterrestrial life, UFOs, and UAPs. Previous administrations were not transparent enough. Now the people can judge for themselves — what is really going on? Have fun!'

The Pentagon's statement was more measured: 'American citizens can now access declassified federal UAP files in real time, without any security clearance.'

The website received more than 1.7 billion visits within weeks. For a single government website, in that time frame, this is without precedent.

What the First Release Contained

Apollo mission photographs: NASA released images from the Apollo 12 (1969) and Apollo 17 (1972) missions showing unidentified objects above the lunar horizon. The Pentagon noted: 'New preliminary analysis suggests this may be an image of a physical object in the scene.'

New Mexico light-sphere incidents, 1948–1950: A 116-page classified document recorded extensive sightings near a classified military installation — 'green fireballs,' 'discs,' and 'fireballs' appearing with notable regularity. The Department of Defense acknowledged at least 209 similar incidents near military bases during this period.

Navy infrared footage: US Central Command submitted a 2 minute 57 second infrared video from 2023 showing an unidentified object executing multiple precise 90-degree turns over water at approximately 80 miles per hour. Under Newtonian mechanics, the g-forces required for such maneuvers would far exceed the physiological limits of any known pilot.

On June 12, 2026 — the same day Steven Spielberg's film Disclosure Day premiered globally — the Pentagon released its third batch of declassified documents: 72 files in total. Department of War spokesperson Sean Parnell stated: 'Since war.gov/ufo launched on May 8, the site has accumulated more than 1.7 billion visits worldwide. We and our partner agencies continue to prepare the next release.'

4.1  FBI Agents: 'Are You Seeing This?'

The most striking documents in the third release were first-hand accounts from US federal law enforcement officers. In 2023, five FBI agents on duty witnessed a glowing sphere appear on the horizon. One agent described the moment his partner turned to him and said simply: 'Are you seeing this?' The sphere hovered silently, then vanished without a sound.

The FBI assessed these agents' accounts as 'highly credible' and produced digital renderings based on their descriptions — the first time the Bureau had formally done so for UAP accounts.

That one phrase — 'Are you seeing this?' — is worth pausing on. It tells us something important about what institutional silence does to ordinary people. Even a trained federal agent, witnessing something with a colleague, could not quite trust his own perception until confirmed by someone else.

4.2  The Harare Airport Incident, Zimbabwe, 2008

The third release included a CIA report from July 2008 documenting a UAP sighting over Harare International Airport. The report was transmitted directly to the White House Situation Room and the full intelligence community. Witnesses described an object 'hovering above the airport, disc-shaped, hollow at the center, with a row of rotating lights beneath, apparently projecting beams.' The third release included a 2022 sighting report from near Colorado Springs describing an object shaped like a potato, with a surface described as 'pearlescent white' and 'semi-translucent, with a scale-like texture.' Colorado Springs is the location of Cheyenne Mountain — home to NORAD, the nerve center of American air defense. Whatever this object was, it was sighted in proximity to one of the most surveilled airspaces in the world.

4.4  NASA Audio Declassification

The third release also included declassified NASA audio — among it, a 1962 discussion between astronaut Gordon Cooper and journalist Walter Cronkite. Cooper, one of the original Mercury Seven, had spoken publicly on multiple occasions about aerial phenomena he could not explain. The release of this material marks the first time NASA has formally incorporated astronaut UAP accounts into the public record.

From the Mengxi Bitan to the Meng Zhaoguo Incident

UAP sightings are not a Western phenomenon. China has one of the world's oldest traditions of systematic sky observation, and its classical records contain accounts that remain genuinely difficult to explain.

5.1  Shen Kuo's Personal Account

Shen Kuo (1031–1095), the Song dynasty polymath whose Mengxi Bitan stands as one of the most important scientific texts in Chinese history, recorded a direct personal observation: in Yangzhou, he witnessed a large luminous sphere 'like a great pearl' rise from a lake, hover in the air, and illuminate the surrounding forest 'as brightly as daylight.' It then vanished — only to reappear moments later. Shen Kuo was known for the rigour of his observations. His description matches, in almost every particular, the pattern of modern UAP sighting reports.

5.2  The Meng Zhaoguo Incident, 1994

In 1994, a forestry worker named Meng Zhaoguo, working in Heilongjiang Province, reported encountering a landed unidentified craft in the forest and claimed he was taken aboard. His account was investigated and documented. Whatever the truth of the matter, this incident reflects a broader pattern: in a country where UAP topics have long been officially discouraged, civilian reports have never stopped.

5.3  The Chinese Government's Position

Unlike the United States, the Chinese government has never publicly released systematic UAP research. After the American declassification program began in May 2026, Chinese state media coverage was notably sparse. That silence is itself worth noting — and comparing to the decades of American silence that preceded 2026.

From Contested Claims to Serious Scientific Investigation

If UAPs are real, what is propelling them? This question has been at the center of debate for decades. We begin with a brief look at the early controversies, then turn to where the genuinely important work is happening today — in mainstream scientific institutions with verifiable track records.

6.1  Bob Lazar: A Contested Early Account

In 1989, Bob Lazar publicly claimed to have worked at a classified facility near Area 51, where he said he participated in reverse-engineering a recovered craft. He described a fuel source involving what he called 'Element 115' — not then known to science.

In 2003, researchers did synthesize Element 115 (now officially named moscovium), which made Lazar's early description somewhat less implausible. But most of his core claims remain unverifiable by independent means. Lazar occupies a notable place in the history of UAP research. His account also illustrates a principle that applies throughout this field: personal testimony, however vivid, requires independent verification. The accounts that merit the most attention are those backed by institutional records.

6.2  The US Navy: Maneuvers That Should Not Be Possible

"Where Is Everybody?"

In 1950, physicist Enrico Fermi posed a question over lunch that became one of the most provocative unsolved problems in science:

"Where is everybody?"

The universe contains hundreds of billions of galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars. If life can arise — as it demonstrably did on Earth — why have we found no sign of any other intelligent civilization?

This is the Fermi Paradox. It has generated decades of serious scientific attention. And yet the most important variable in the paradox has rarely been examined: how much of it was produced not by the absence of other civilizations, but by the institutional suppression of evidence about phenomena we were actually observing?

7.1  The Drake Equation

In 1961, astronomer Frank Drake proposed a formula to estimate the number of communicable civilizations in the Milky Way. With even conservative inputs, the equation suggests our galaxy should contain many. The SETI program — Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence — has been listening for radio signals from other civilizations since then. After more than six decades, it has found nothing definitively.

7.2  Oumuamua: The First Known Interstellar Object

In October 2017, an object passed through our solar system on a trajectory and at a velocity inconsistent with any known natural body. Named Oumuamua — Hawaiian for 'messenger from afar' — its anomalies included: acceleration departing the solar system that cannot be accounted for by solar gravity; an unusually flat shape unlike any known asteroid or comet; no cometary tail despite trajectory deviations that gravity alone cannot explain.

Avi Loeb proposed that Oumuamua might be a light-sail-propelled interstellar artifact — a manufactured object from another civilization. Most astronomers remain skeptical. But no one has produced a complete natural explanation either. The object is gone. We cannot go back and look again.

7.3  Hossenfelder's Nokia Analogy — and the Frequency Problem

German theoretical physicist Sabine Hossenfelder offered a pointed analogy: 'We are like someone holding a second-hand Nokia 1308 feature phone, trying to receive a 5G signal.'

SETI has spent decades listening for radio signals — a technology that human civilization itself may abandon within a century. A civilization tens of thousands of years more advanced than ours has almost certainly moved to communication methods we have not yet conceived. We have been searching on the wrong frequency.

This is not merely a technological observation. It is a civilizational one. And it is the insight encoded in this book's title: the universe has never been silent. We simply chose the wrong frequency.

8.1  Three Possible Human Responses

The first: panic. Throughout history, the encounter with a powerful and unfamiliar 'other' has often triggered fear as the initial response.

The second: worship. Treating a more advanced civilization as divine, and surrendering the capacity for independent thought.

The third: learning. Treating the encounter as an occasion to grow.

Human civilization has produced all three responses in different eras and different encounters. What determined the outcome was rarely the relative power of the parties. It was which attitude each chose to bring.

8.2  Viktor Frankl's Lesson

The Austrian psychiatrist Viktor Frankl spent three years in Nazi concentration camps and lost almost everyone he loved. From that extremity, he brought out one of the most important insights in the history of human thought:

"In any given set of circumstances, the last of all human freedoms is the freedom to choose one's attitude toward those circumstances."

Applied to the possibility of encountering a far more powerful civilization: no matter how great the external force, humanity retains the one thing no outside power can remove — the capacity to choose how it responds.

8.3  Civilizational Humility and Civilizational Dignity

Perhaps when facing the possibility of a higher civilization, the most important thing for humanity is not to become more powerful — but to become more honest. Honest about our limitations. Honest about what we do not know. Honest in our acknowledgment that eighty years of institutional silence was a choice, and that choice had consequences.

What They Taught Us About Ourselves

UAPs' Greatest Contribution May Not Be Technological

By now you have traveled from ancient cave paintings to the June 2026 declassified files. Before this book closes, I want to ask a different question:

If UAPs are real, what is their greatest contribution to humanity?

Not the transfer of technology. Not new energy sources. Not interstellar travel. But this: for the first time, they have given humanity the experience of looking at itself from the scale of the universe.

10.1  'Small' Is Not Bad News

For millennia, humanity imagined itself at the center of everything. The Earth was the center of the cosmos. Humans were the masters of the Earth. Human life was the most important thing in existence.

Copernicus told us the Earth is not the center of the universe. Darwin told us humanity was not separately created. Modern cosmology tells us there are at least two trillion galaxies in the observable universe. If UAPs are real and originate elsewhere, another form of intelligence may have existed for millions of years before us.

Each time, humanity's sense of its special position has contracted. And each time, humanity has not collapsed — but has begun to ask, more seriously: in a universe this vast, what actually matters?

Recognizing our smallness does not diminish humanity. It gives us the humility to continue learning.

10.2  The Universe Invites Us to Redefine Greatness

At the scale of the universe, an emperor who conquered continents and a villager who spent a lifetime in quiet acts of kindness may be equally small in cosmic terms. But there may be one thing that retains meaning even at that scale: a conscious being that, in the brief duration of its existence, chose goodness, honesty, and love.

This is not religion, and it is not philosophy. It is a logical inference: if civilizations far older than ours exist and continue to exist, they have long since moved beyond competition for material resources. What sustains them across millennia must be something deeper than power. And that something is almost certainly not force — but wisdom. Not control — but understanding. Not possession — but connection.

10.3  Reagan's Words at the United Nations

On September 21, 1987, President Ronald Reagan addressed the United Nations General Assembly and said:

'I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world. And yet I ask — is not an alien force already among us?'

A sitting American president, before the full General Assembly of the United Nations, said those words. They have never received any official explanation.

What he was pointing to may be the deepest paradox in human civilization: we cannot unite around what we share, but we might unite around a shared 'other.' If the UAP phenomenon — and the long history of institutional silence around it — could bring humanity to the recognition that we are, at the scale of the universe, a single species with a common stake in honest inquiry, that may be its most enduring contribution.

Not technology. Not proof. But the perspective that comes from finally, honestly, looking up.

10.4  Where FTL Stands

This is what the FTL Civilizational Reflections series has always been trying to say.

We do not know whether extraterrestrial civilizations exist. We do not know what the unidentified aerial phenomena in the classified files ultimately are. We do not know whether ancient cave paintings record imagination or memory.

But we know this: when humanity begins to take these questions seriously — and to demand that institutions treat them seriously — we begin to ask more fundamental questions:

Who are we?

Where do we come from?

What kind of civilization do we want to become?

These questions matter more than any technological answer. Because a civilization that cannot answer them — even if it achieves interstellar travel — will only carry its unresolved contradictions to farther places.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTIONIf a more advanced civilization exists and is observing us —what do you think they find most worth watching?Our technology?Our art?Our capacity, even in the face of suffering, to choose kindness?And: is our willingness to finally ask honest questions about the universea sign that we are becoming a more mature civilization?Or is it too early to say?

Epilogue

We Simply Chose the Wrong Frequency

We have traveled from ten-thousand-year-old cave paintings to World War II's Foo Fighters, from Roswell to the May and June 2026 declassified files, through Fermi's question and the strange visitor called Oumuamua, through four civilizational thought experiments.

Now we return to where we began.

The Fermi Paradox rests on an assumption that has rarely been examined: that if a higher civilization exists, it should appear to us in a form we already know how to recognize. That assumption may have been wrong from the start. And the eighty years of institutional silence that preceded 2026 may have made it worse — by preventing the open inquiry that might have helped us develop better ways of looking.

The universe has never been silent.

It appeared in the cave paintings of people who lived ten thousand years ago.

It appeared in the reports of pilots who didn't know what to make of what they saw.

It appeared in that FBI agent's quiet 'Are you seeing this?'

It appeared in the 1.7 billion people who clicked on a government website because they needed to know.

That was not the arrival of something new. That was the return of something very old — something that had always been present, waiting for us to develop the institutional honesty, the scientific courage, and the civilizational humility to look at it directly.

The universe has never been silent.

The silence has always been ours.

Perhaps the universe has been answering all along.

We simply chose the wrong frequency.
